How to Add VSTs to Ableton Live 7

    • 1). Create a folder named "VST Plug-ins" in the Program Files folder on your C: drive. Although not necessary, creating this folder is an efficient way to keep your VST plug-ins in one location for easy reference and scanning.

    • 2). Install your third-party VST plug-in using the instructions provided by its publisher. In most cases, installing a VST plug-in is a matter of placing its associated DLL file in a location of your choice. However, some plug-ins come with a traditional installer that may not give you the option to place the DLL in the VST Plug-ins folder created in Step 1. In this case, don't move the DLL file to the VST Plug-ins folder -- this may break the installation. Live can scan for VSTs in any folder on your drive using the procedure described in the following steps.

    • 3). Open Ableton Live. When it loads, open the Options menu and choose Preferences. Live's preferences dialog screen will appear.

    • 4). Click on Files/Folders and activate the button labeled Use VST Plug-in Custom Folder.

    • 5). Click Browse. A file navigation dialog will appear. Navigate to the VST Plug-ins folder created in Step 1 and click OK.

    • 6). Click the Rescan button. Ableton Live will scan the VST Plug-ins folder for installed VSTs and register them for use.

    • 7). Repeat Steps 4 through 6, replacing the VST Plug-ins folder with any other folder in which a VST DLL has been installed. Once you do this, you will be able to use all third-party VST instruments and effects installed on your system in Ableton Live.
