How to Move a Trailer Home
- 1). Consult your local government to find out what documentation is needed to legally transport your trailer home to a new location. Depending on area laws, you may not be permitted to move until all of your area taxes are paid and up to date. Get a receipt as proof that your taxes are paid in full to make getting a permit to move your trailer home easier.
- 2). Terminate the existing lot lease and utility connections. Trailer home parks and utility companies require advance notice of a move. Find out what the notice time is at the trailer park and make sure that you hand in yours within the time frame. Provide any utility company that services your trailer with an exact cut-off date.
- 3). Find and hire a licensed transport service. Make sure that the company you hire is licensed to transport mobile homes. Also check that the driver is insured to cover the kind of damage that could be caused if there's an accident during the move. Present the proof of insurance to your insurance company to make sure it's acceptable.
- 4). Purchase insurance to cover the home during the move. The transport service insurance might not cover all eventualities in case of an accident during the move so have your own insurance in place to make sure you're not left homeless.
- 5). Remove all personal belongings from the trailer home. Furniture, appliances and any other household items will only add extra weight and can cause damage if they shift about during the move. Storing these items in a rented moving van is a way to combine both storage and transport needs. Secure all non-removable objects (cabinet and closet doors, toilet seat lids) prior to moving.
- 6). Remove the skirting and any attached structures such as steps. Skirting can be easily removed and the salvageable pieces saved to be used at the new site. Also take down any exterior lighting since it may be blown free during the move.
- 7). Provide the transport company with a detailed plan of the route and lot number where the trailer home will be relocated. Be as exact as possible to ensure that your home doesn't end up in the wrong location. The moving company will handle all heavy lifting and final preparation.
