How to Decorate a Front Porch With Shades

    • 1). Install a hammock on the side of the porch with the shades. This gives you the option to relax with or without the sun shining in your face.

    • 2). Hang the shades on the sides of the patio that are perpendicular to your house. This is dependent upon which direction your home faces. For instance, if your home faces the north or the south, this allows you to control whether you want to block the sun in the morning, at night or both. Likewise, if your home faces east or west, install shades on the side of your porch that is parallel to your home to have the same options.

    • 3). Install drapes on the side of the porch that is parallel to your home, and opt for blinds on the two sides of your porch that are perpendicular to your home. This gives you the option of complete protection from the sun at all times of the day.

    • 4). Position potted plants in the locations on your porch where you plan to have the sun shine through most of the time. If you decorate your porch so that the plants are in the shade, you do not allow enough sunlight to reach each plant. Alternatively, you can also decorate with artificial plants.

    • 5). Place all metal and wrought-iron seating in the shaded area of the porch so that you can sit on these pieces without being burned by metal that has been heated by the sun. Place the furniture that has fabric coverings in the area that receives the most sunlight.

    • 6). Hang rattan or matchstick roll-up shades so you also protect your porch decor from rain. This allows you to have more options when choosing the type of furniture you wish to use.

    • 7). Hang a swing on the same side as the shades so you can control when the sun shines through. This prevents the sun from shining in your face or on your back while you are relaxing.
