The first step is to pick your area of interest.
From vintage racers, modern sport boats and cutting-edge hydros to scale tugs, warships and fishing boats, and pleasure yachts, almost any type of craft can be made as an RC model.
The type of boat you choose and the function you want it to perform will determine what you need.
Boat kits are available in various materials and in all stages of completion, from raw plans to complete ready-to-run (RTR) boats.
For beginners, RTR kits are a good starting point.
The hulls are formed plastic (usually white) and don't require painting.
RTR boats tend to be sport boats rather than racers and emphasize simplicity and reliability over all-out speed or meticulous scale detail.
The idea behind these designs is to make things easy for beginners: just drop them in the water and enjoy! Kits that require building may have plastic hulls, or they may be of fiberglass and have a gelcoat finish.
Painting and waterproofing are not required with these, though you may have to apply decals.
Plan on some light assembly work; some parts may have to be glued, trimmed, sanded, drilled, or screwed together.
More advanced kits usually have wooden hulls that have to be built and painted.
These can be plank-on-frame, mimicking full-size construction techniques, or they may employ die-cut sheets for the hull surface.
Both types work well but require more effort to assemble, sand, prime and finish.
Most kits come with a radio box to protect the electronics from water.
Powerboats of various types make up the lions share of RC craft.
This group can be divided into two classes: sport boats and racers.
Sport boats are designed--first and foremost--to be fun.
Performance is certainly important, but not at the expense of operator enjoyment.
Likewise, many sport boats have scale-like features, but authenticity takes a back seat to function.
Sport boats are probably the best choice for inexperienced modelers, because they are designed with an eye toward easy and reliable operation with a healthy dose of speed mixed in.
Racing boats are more uncompromising and, therefore, more temperamental.
The priority in a racer is performance; appearance and ease of operation are secondary.
These boats are the fastest, but they are also the most high-maintenance and the most demanding to drive From maintenance to upgrading you need accessories for your RC boat ...
Want the straight scoop on how to make RC boats go fast -- reeeeealy fast? Cast Your Anchor offers all of the accessories that will make your RC boating experience a joy.
Our technicians are happy to share their knowledge with you.
Cast Your Anchor is the place to shop for all of your RC accessories.
Our submarines are fully functional and you can control submarines up to 10 meters deep.
All subs include RC submarine and RC controller.
The submarine has an internal battery that charges off the RC controller in about 6 minutes.
The RC controller requires 6 AA batteries.
Explore the depths of your fish tank, pool or fountain with our submarine.
Our deep diving research sub will probe depths up to 10 feet while maintaining a solid radio link.
Twin motors and fully proportional radio control ascends and executes turn-on-a-dime maneuvers.
RC subs can make a quick dive or quick surface.
If you stop operating, or if the radio waves fail to reach the RC submarine, the safety system will automatically bring the submarine to the surface.
Terrific fun for all ages.
Welcome to the exciting hobby of constructing, sailing, and competing with radio controlled model sailboats.
Building a model sailing yacht is not as complex as you might think.
In fact, construction can normally be accomplished in four or five enjoyable evenings of modeling fun.
Learning the art of sailing radio controlled model yachts is quite simple.
Children as young as seven or eight years old have become accomplished skippers.
Our line of kits has been expressly designed for the person who has limited model-building experience.
We developed our models to be economical and simple to construct.
The Victor Model Products kits are pre-molded from quality materials, which insure an accurate assembly in a minimum amount of time.
Normally, a two-channel radio is used to control the vessel.
One channel controls the rudder while the second channel trims the sails.
A simple two-channel radio with two standard servos can be used to control the smaller sailboats while the larger ones will require a sail winch for trimming the sails, although a standard size servo is adequate for rudder control.
Cast Your Anchor Supports the Soling 1 meter class.
We carry an extensive line of replacement parts and fittings.
RC sailboats, like all RC models, come in varying degrees of completeness.
You may want to enjoy building a model from a kit, or you may just want to get sailing as soon as possible with an ARS (Almost Ready To Sail) or a RTS (Ready To Sail) boat, such as an RTS sailboat only takes minutes to assemble, its usually just a case of connecting and rigging the mast and main sail, and away you go! An ARS model will be 90% finished with just maybe a few details left, such as deck details, for you to add over the course of a couple of evenings.
With an ARS sailboat, you'll need to buy separately and install the radio control gear.
A standard ARS or RTS model will be 2-channel, the transmitter being the traditional stick type rather than the modern pistol grip style, as there's no need for a throttle control.
One servo controls rudder movement while the second servo controls both sails together.
Its normal on RC sailboats for a winch servo to be used for the control of the sails, rather than a standard servo.
Winch servos are more powerful and have more movement.
A standard servo is usually fine for the smaller sailboats, but models that are longer than 20 inches will require the more powerful winch servo because when the sails are filled with wind they require a much stronger force to pull them round.
You may find that you need to upgrade to a stronger winch servo if you are sailing your model in stronger winds than the recommended speed, as stated by the models manufacturer.
RC sailboats are a completely different game to nitro or electric powered RC boats.
You need no field equipment items and no-one will ever object to you sailing your model in a public place, as there are no noise issues.
We are here to help you enjoy the sport of radio controlled model sailing.
Whether you are just starting out, or an old salt, you will find great information at Cast Your Anchor, all designed to help you enjoy this booming sport.
