How to Wrap Heat Tape on Exhaust Headers

    • 1). Remove the exhaust headers from the car. Removal will be specific to your car, so consult your factory workshop manual for this step.

    • 2). Scrub the headers with an all-purpose cleaner to thoroughly remove any dirt, debris and oils from them. Dry the headers.

    • 3). Soak the header tape in water, or use a spray bottle of water. Wetting the tape will make it easier to wrap around the tubing as well as cut down on the amount of fibers that will come off the tape. Read the instructions for the tape to make sure it's OK to wet it, since not all types of header tape should be soaked.

    • 4). Begin installing the tape at the end of the header closest to the exhaust port, where the header attaches to the motor. This will be the opposite end of the exhaust tip.

    • 5). Wrap the header tape fully around the header twice, overlapping ¼ inch. Secure the tape with header tape ties or a hose clamp.

    • 6). Wrap the header tape progressively around the header, continuing to overlap 1/4 inch as you go. Periodically pull on the tape to maintain as much tension on the tape as possible to make sure the tape stays tight.

    • 7). Wrap the header pipes together if they get too close to fit the tape between them. Use the same ¼-inch overlap.

    • 8). Reinstall the header. It is normal for the header tape to smoke upon initial start-up; this is part of the curing process.
