What Is a Ford 428 Side Oiler?
- The side oiler system was introduced in 1965 and it first appeared on the 427 CID engine. The lubrication system is where the engine gets its name. Oil went to the crankshaft first and then moved to the cam and valve train. The large oil gallery on the engine's left side help keep the main bearings lubricated at high revs. The main bearing and the rod journals were cross drilled which allowed for better lubrication.
- The 428 Side Oiler displaced 428 cubic inches (seven liters). The 428 was created by increasing the bore and stroke of the 390 cubic inch engine to 4.13 inches and 3.19 inches respectfully. The first high performance 428 appeared in 1966 as the Police Interceptor. The Cobra Jet 428 appeared late in the 1968 model year.
- The Side Oiler had upgraded connecting rods and it was used in the GT40 Le Mans race car. Other upgrades included hydraulic cam lifters and Tunnelport heads in 1968. The head design had intake runners for the push rods to pass through in order to maximize intake flow.
