How to Remove a Bathtub for a Standing Shower

    • 1). Turn off the water supply to the tub. Open the plumbing access panel. If your tub doesn't have an access panel, you will have to cut a hole into the wall that is opposite the side of your tub where the drain and faucets are. Using an adjustable wrench, disconnect the drain and the overflow pipe. If your faucets come through your tub and not the wall above it, disconnect the faucets as well.

    • 2). Using a hammer and cold chisel, remove the bottom row of tiles that is just above the tub. This will expose the upper flange of the tub that is behind this row of tiles. Run a utility knife around the flange and remove any caulking, glue or other materials that may be holding the tub to the wall.

    • 3). Remove any trim that is between the tub and the floor. If the floor tiles obscure the bottom edge of the tub, remove the row of tiles closest to the tub. Run a utility knife between the tub and the floor to loosen the tub.

    • 4). Gently work the crowbar in between the tub and one of the studs of the back wall. Pry the tub away from the wall. When it is loose, you should be able to pull it out horizontally without disturbing any more of the tiles above it. If other bathroom items prevent you from removing the tub horizontally, you may have to remove more of the tiles above the tub in order to lift it out vertically or at an angle.

    • 5). Place some strips of wood or a heavy blanket on the floor before pulling out the tub in order to protect the floor tiles. Have someone help you lift and remove the tub out of the bathroom.
