How Do Forklifts Work?

    Introduction to Forklifts

    • Forklifts have become essential pieces of equipment in warehouses. These small machines are capable of moving heavy loads with ease. Production can be increased because these machines are able to move heavy items easier and more safely than they could be moved by individuals alone. Forklifts have three main components: steering, power and lifting.

    Steering

    • Forklift drivers, or operators, usually drive a forklift backward because items that are being moved are on the front of the forklift on a forked platform. Driving forward obstructs the operator's view. The rear wheels of the forklift are the steering wheels. The rear end spins the load-bearing front wheels. Maneuvering a forklift is difficult due to the small turning radius.

    Power

    • Forklifts have a wide variety of fuel sources to power them, such as propane, gasoline, diesel or electricity. The fuel used depends on the particular model of forklift. There are two types of forklift wheels. Solid rubber tires are used for lighter loads, while pneumatic, or air, tires are used for much larger, heavier loads.

    Lifting

    • A forklift derives its name from the two forks that are on the front of the machine. The forks can be moved up and down vertically and tilted downward and upward. The positioning of the forks varies by the particular load being moved. Hydraulic cylinders apply pressure against a bar with rolling chains to move the forks. The rolling chain is applied to the forks at one end and a frame at the other.

    Safety

    • Forklifts can be very dangerous. Most accidents, when involving a pedestrian, results in serious injury or even death. Forklifts are very heavy machines, due to the counterbalance needed to maneuver large loads. Because of a forklift's weight, it takes longer to stop when the brake is applied than with an ordinary vehicle. Pedestrians should always be alert and aware of their surroundings when a forklift is being operated. One should never stand under the forks when a forklift is loaded. The load can fall or knock over other material. Common sense is the best tool when working around forklifts.
