Glass Wall Panelling in Showers

It is my opinion that you cannot find a better protecting and more maintenance-free product than glass for wall panelling. The fact that a panel can be so large that it covers an area without a join is absolutely brilliant. If you consider a shower cubicle. Normally this would be tiled, and over a period of time the grout would become discoloured and dirty. It is then very difficult to clean the grout and may result in having to replace the grout in the future which is a big job and usually results in tiles chipping at the edges. If you have lived enough years you would probably have experienced this.

Glass on the other hand has few joins and these are normally filled with clear silicone. This means that when the silicone deteriorates over a 3 to 5 year periods you only have a number of long strips to replace. This is normally done with a sharp knife or special razors. This is far less work than going round each tile one-by-one! The worse case is mosaics and look how often they are used in showers! The best course then is actually to replace the mosaic tiles.

Inside showers you can even ask the glass supplier to apply a polymer coating to the glass surface which resists water marks. The easiest way to keep the glass clean on a regular basis is by using a shower squeegee. These are normally available from most DIY centres and come in chrome to match your bathroom. You can then routinely clean your shower as normal.

The shower panels can have cut-outs for the mixer valve, outlet pipes, and shower head attachments. There are many companies producing this type of product now and in the UK and Australia particularly, you will find the most choice. The main issue is finding a company that does good quality workmanship. This is where the Glass Splashback and Worktop Association (GSWA) really scores. We have a charter which requires members to meet our standards to be approved so that the public know what to expect from the supplier they choose.

Please take a look at our website to see the standards suppliers have to meet and please take a look at the video www.GlassSplashbacksandWorktops.org. We hope that this has been informative and if you have any questions please contact us on info@GlassSplashbacksandWorktops.org.
