How to Troubleshoot a Graco Paint Sprayer

    • 1). Turn the engine switch to ON if the engine won't start. Make sure the gas tank is full. Check to see if the spark plug cable is disconnected or damaged. If it is, either connect it or replace it. Use the choke if the engine is cold. Also make sure the fuel shutoff lever is in the ON position. There is also a chance that oil is seeping into the combustion chamber. Remove the spark plug and pull the starter three or four times. Clean or replace the spark plug. Try to start the engine again. May sure the sprayer is upright in order to avoid seepage.

    • 2). Turn the pressure adjusting knob clockwise to increase pressure if the engine operates but the displacement pump does not. The fluid filter or the tip or tip filter may also be clogged. You'll need to clean them. Also make sure that the pump switch is in the ON position.

    • 3). Clean the strainer if the pump output is low. The engine speed may also be too low. You'll need to increase the throttle setting. Increase the pressure if it is too low. Clean the filters if the fluid filter or the tip filter or the tip are clogged or dirty. Use of more than 100 ft. of 1/2-inch hose will also significantly decrease the performance of the sprayer. Make sure to use 3/8-inch hose to ensure optimum performance.

    • 4). Remove the throat packing nut spacer if there is excessive paint leakage into the throat packing nut. The throat packing nut may be loose. Tighten it just enough to stop the leakage.

    • 5). Check and tighten all fluid connections if the pump is difficult to prime. There may be air in the pump or hose. Reduce the engine speed and then cycle the pump very slowly during priming. The intake valve may also be leaking. Clean it and make sure the ball seat is not damaged or worn and that the ball seats correctly. If the paint is too thick, you'll want to thin it in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
