How to Use VIN Numbers to Find the Model & Year of a Car

    CARFAX

    • 1). Have your VINs handy. You can find the VIN on the right side of the windshield (from the outside facing the car) by the dashboard. Or, check the driver's side door-jamb or under the hood for a VIN sticker.

    • 2). Go to the CARFAX website, which offers a free VIN decoder (see the link in the Resources section). If you want a vehicle history report, you can expect to pay, but it is free to view year, make and model.

    • 3). Enter in the VIN and click "Get the CARFAX" button to continue. The vehicle's year, make and model is located on the next page.

    AutoCheck

    • 1). Go to the AutoCheck website (see Resources).

    • 2). Enter your VIN in the space provided.

    • 3). Click "enter" to review the vehicle's year, make, model, body style and engine.

    Motoverse

    • 1). Go to the Motoverse website (see Resources).

    • 2). Enter your VIN into the space provided next to "decode a VIN."

    • 3). Click "Go" to see the vehicle year and model. In addition, you can view standard features, safety features, make and transmission information.
