President Barack Obama will be celebrated as an American hero. Create a bulletin board to celebrate both his journey to becoming who he is and all he stands for. In the center of a bulletin board, place a portrait, either purchased or printed from the computer. Staple his name in capital letters at the top of the bulletin board. Under his name, in a different color, staple the words "Son of Promise -- Child of Hope." Display a few photos him at the age of the students in your school. Hawaii, where Obama lived for many years, represents many cultures living in harmony. Display a map of Hawaii with a palm leaf. Obama has been considered a bridge between people. Display a bridge with the caption "A Bridge for Many." Display a picture of the white house including his wife and two daughters to show he is a president and a family man.

    Helen Keller

Helen Keller defied all of the odds to become the hero she is. Inspire students who may be feeling defeated by what they perceive as their lack of ability with all Keller was able to overcome. Keller wrote that many people with eyesight never took the time to see the beauty around them. Staple a portrait of her in the center of the board under the wording of her name, and staple beautiful calendar photographs on one side of her image. Print the words "Do You SEE the Beauty Around You?" On the other side of her portrait, staple a real pine branch, an artificial flower and a small bouquet of real leaves to the bulletin board. Print the words "Do you FEEL, HEAR and SMELL the Beauty Around You?"

    Thomas Alva Edison

Thomas Alva Edison was the father of American inventions -- he did not know how to give up. He turned his attempt to improve the telephone into one of his favorite inventions: the phonograph. Print or purchase a portrait of Edison to staple to the bulletin board's center. The title "Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Thomas Had a Good Idea" should be prominently displayed at the top of the board. "What's Your Good Idea?" should be stapled to the bottom right of the board. Print a picture of a phonograph with the caption, "The phonograph was Edison's favorite invention. The first word's ever recorded were 'Mary had a little lamb.'" Print and staple several other inventions, such as the light bulb and the kinetoscope.

A rather contemporary famous American is Frank Lloyd Wright. Celebrate his ability to stand on his own and design homes and buildings in his own individual, successful way. Display a purchased or printed portrait of Wright in the center of the board. Staple the words "At Home in Nature" at the top and "Frank Lloyd Wright" on the bottom. Print several examples of homes or buildings designed by Wright. Invite students, as a special assignment, to design a house to be built around -- rather than destroying -- nature. Post the students' ideas next to Wright's.
