How to Replace a Washer for a Single Faucet Shower Head

    • 1). Turn off the water at the faucet knob, typically by twisting the knob clockwise as far as it will turn. On some faucets, you must push in the knob and turn clockwise.

    • 2). Unscrew the shower head from the overhead pipe, using an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut on the end of the shower head.

    • 3). Grab the edge of the washer with needle-nose pliers to pull it out of the shower head. Remove any washers beneath the main washer seal, since some shower heads have more than one. Take all parts with you to a store to match with the correct size replacements. Washers are inexpensive, so you should replace all of them at once to save time. If one washer fails, the others may soon fail as well.

    • 4). Insert the new washers in the reverse order that the old ones were removed. Press each washer with your thumb to seat it inside the showerhead.

    • 5). Wind Teflon tape around the threading on the overhead pipe.

    • 6). Attach the shower head to the overhead pipe and tighten the nut with the adjustable wrench.
