Design Your Own Bedroom
- 1). Determine a budget for the bedroom; a small budget can allow for greater creativity, rather than just buying pieces already finished.
- 2). Decide on a color and style for the bedroom. Look at the clothes in your closet for inspiration concerning your personality and colors you like. Find magazine pictures of styles that fit your personality.
- 3). Measure the bedroom and features such as doors, closets and windows, and draw the floor plan to scale; 1 inch equals 1 foot is a simple ratio, though a large enough piece of paper is needed. For example if the room measures 12 by 14 feet, you would need a piece of paper larger than 12 by 14 inches.
- 4). Measure the size of furniture that will be used in the room and draw outlines of each on a separate paper in the same scale as the bedroom drawing. The furniture should be drawn as if you are looking straight down on the piece.
- 5). Plan space for functions that will be done in the room other than sleeping, such as a reading nook, writing desk, play area or spot for enjoying a beautiful view.
- 6). Cut out each furniture or accessory item and create different arrangements on the floor plan until you find the best arrangement. Draw an outline around each shape on the floor plan.
- 7). Select lighting fixtures for different levels of lighting. An ambient fixture will provide general light for the room. Task lighting is needed for desks, a reading lamp on the nightstand and a spotlight fixed on the closet. Accent lighting highlights a decorative niche or artwork; subtle candlelight creates a romantic mood.
