Systemic Cellulitis Diseases

    Symptoms

    • Common symptoms of cellulitis include a sore that is red and warm to the touch. It may be swollen and tender. Tiny red spots that appear in threes may be present. A red line may extend from the wound. Some patients may also experience a fever and chills.

    Risk Factors

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, you are at a greater risk of developing a cellulitis infection if you have a weakened immune system, you are diabetic or have chickenpox or shingles.

    Diagnosis

    • Diagnosis of cellulitis is usually determined by the appearance of a wound. A blood culture can determine the exact strain of the bacteria in the wound.

    Treatment

    • Treatment of cellulitis consists of a prescription antibiotic to help fight the infection and avoid further complications.

    Complications

    • Complications from cellulitis can occur if not treated within the first couple of days. Once the bacteria have entered the body, they can spread deeper into the body and into the blood. The infection can then become an emergency.
