Instructions to Install a Kenmore Washing Machine Clutch
- 1). Pull the washing machine away from the wall and unplug the power cord. Turn off the water supply lines and disconnect them from the machine, using a pair of pliers. Squeeze the clamp on the drain hose at the back of the Kenmore washer and pull the hose from the machine.
- 2). Remove the softener dispenser from the agitator by pulling it off, if one is present. Remove the cap from the agitator using a flat screwdriver to pry it off. Remove the nut and washer from inside the agitator using a socket and ratchet. Lift the agitator out of the Kenmore washing machine.
- 3). Tilt the washer over so it is lying on its back on the floor. Unsnap the retaining clamps from the water pump using a regular screwdriver. Do not disconnect the hoses on the pump. Set the pump aside. Unplug the wiring harness from the washing machine motor by pulling it off.
- 4). Remove the gear case from the Kenmore washing machine using a socket and ratchet to loosen the bolts. Remove the thrust washer from the shaft by sliding it off. Remove the retaining clip from the shaft using a flat screwdriver to pry it off. Slide the old clutch assembly from the shaft.
- 5). Remove the clip from the white brake cam using a regular screwdriver. Remove the brake cam and discard it. Open the new clutch assembly and spread the parts on a table. Press the new isolator ring into the center of the clutch. Install the new clutch on the shaft. Install the new retaining ring on the shaft and push it into place with a flat screwdriver.
- 6). Install the new support ring on the shaft over the clutch. Place the thrust washer on the shaft. Put the new brake cam on the shaft and install the retaining clip using a pair of needle-nose pliers to push it onto the shaft. Insert the assembly into the Kenmore washing machine. Install the retaining bolts using a socket and ratchet.
- 7). Plug the wiring harness into the motor. Place the water pump on the mounting bracket and secure it using the retaining clips. Lift the Kenmore washer back up so it is sitting upright. Install the agitator along with the washer and retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt using a socket and ratchet. Place the cap on the agitator and push firmly to lock it in place.
- 8). Install the softener dispenser on the agitator if there is one. Connect the drain hose to the machine using a pair of pliers to squeeze the clamp open. Attach the water lines and turn on the water supply valves. Plug the cord into the electrical outlet and push the machine back against the wall.
