How to Train a Dog to Fetch

Just like many other dog training tricks, learning how to train a dog to fetch [http://howtotrainadogforbeginners.blogspot.com/2009/04/how-to-train-dog-to-fetch.html] isn't hard but does require some work. Depending on the breed you have, you may (or may not) find that your dog has some innate ability to fetch without you really have to do much.

Almost any breed of dog can be trained to fetch with the proper techniques. Heck, even the smallest dogs can be trained so don't leave this fun game out of your small dog's life.

How to train a dog to fetch

For you to begin this training, you should pick your dog's favorite toy. I personally like to use toys that make noise or squeak. Tug toys and ropes are secondary because your dog may not willingly give them up after they bring them back and you may be stuck in a game of tug-of-war.

After you've chosen a toy put a long leash on your dog. Without the leash you will not be able to train your dog to fetch. Also, be sure to bring some of your dog's favorite treats as a reward.

Begin by shaking your dog's toy in front of her to get her attention. Once you get the attention you're looking for throw the toy a few feet. Don't throw the ball too far at the beginning. Give you dog the "fetch" command while you are throwing the toy. Once your dog has got the toy use the leash to bring your dog back to you and take the toy away while praising your dog and giving him the treat. Praise and reward is very important and should be used in all dog training techniques for best results.

The last thing you should note is to keep these sessions short and sweet. You want your dog to see this exercise as something fun and not a chore. If at any time you see that your dog is losing interest stop the exercise and try again on a different day.
