1. Kumon Learning Centers
Philosophy: Kumon started in Japan about 50 years ago. Kumon's goal is to get students performing above their grade level, so most parents use it for enrichment.
However, Kumon offers remedial help as well. Repetition is key in the Kumon program. The program recommends attendance for six months - one year for maximum benefit.
Program: Students attend Kumon twice a week and complete worksheets at home.
Subjects: reading and math
Standardized test prep: Kumon does not offer formal test prep but says its students are taught the skills to perform well on tests
Ages: preschool (Junior Kumon)-high school
Cost: Independent franchises set their prices, but typically the cost is $95-$125 per month, plus a one-time registration fee.

Program: Huntington offers one-on-one tutoring, as well as small group learning environments with a 4:1 tutor/student ratio. Students start with an evaluation, and tutors design a customized learning plan.
Subjects: reading, writing, math, phonics, vocabulary, study skills

Program: Sylvan's programs are flexible - they have evening and weekend hours, or you can choose live, online help from your home. The student/tutor ratio is 3:1, and students attend for an hour several times per week. Sylvan offers academic camps during school breaks.
