How to Install a Screw

  • 1

    Clamp the workpiece(s) together.

  • 2

Mark where the screw should go and choose the right screw for the job. (See Related eHows.)

  • 3

Bore a pilot hole slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw. There are special drill bits for countersinking screws in hardwoods, and you should use one of these if appropriate.

  • 4). Lubricate the screw by rubbing a little bit of beeswax on it. Don't use oils because they can stain the wood.

  • 5

Consider putting the screw in at an angle if the workspace is cramped or difficult to get into. Be sure to use a screw that's long enough to accommodate the extra area.
