How to Get Along With Your College Roommate

When you go off to college, there are times that you don't get to choose your own roommate.
You will end up with whomever you are placed with and it can be a difficult situation at times.
The key is to get along with your roommate so that life will be a bit easier for the two of you.
Find out what you can do from the start to get along better.
Be sure that you start off right.
Be friendly.
Be a bit flexible.
Don't be so bossy telling them what you want immediately.
Focus more on meeting the person and who he or she is.
If you start off barking orders, that is a horrible first impression to have.
Talk about the arrangement.
You need to get an understanding about how both of you see this space that you share together.
Some use it just for sleeping.
Some want to study in the room.
Some want to hang out in the room during the day.
Find out what your needs are and what theirs are.
Try to become friends as it will be easier on both of you.
If you know a little about the person, they will be a bit easier to understand especially if something is going wrong in the room.
When something starts to bother you, mention it as soon as possible.
Don't let the issue sit for weeks without saying anything.
If you don't bring it up, they will assume that whatever it is that they are doing is fine.
Speak up else you are stuck with what you get.
Learn to negotiate.
Not everything is going to be your way.
At the same time, they shouldn't get everything their way either.
You need give a little and get a little to have a positive relationship with this person.
Define a space that is entirely yours and keep it that way.
If something of theirs creeps into your space, move it out of your own showing that this part of the room is yours.
If it doesn't work out, try to get a new roommate as this will be much easier than dealing with someone you don't get along with.
