Spray Painting Decorative Glass

Glass is quickly becoming a material used in many places around the home other than windows.
Glass can now be found as wall panels for kitchens known as Glass Splashbacks, Worktops for both the kitchen and bathroom (vanity tops), table tops, balustrades for stairs and so on.
Many of these applications require the glass to be painted on the underside, that way they can be fixed in position using mirror adhesive or something similar without creating an eye sore.
Glass being non porous is naturally a difficult material for paint to adhere.
This means that paint such as emulsion for example will not hold to the glass for very long in almost any condition.
Special paint is now available from many websites to solve this problem.
To paint the glass, typically a car spraying setup is used, where an extractor and filtering system is creating a dust free environment to ensure that the paint does not become contaminated once applied to the glass.
Preparing the glass involves filming up the surface of glass to be kept clear, this will help to stop any over spray affecting the finished appearance.
This is particularly important because over spraying the edges of the glass is required.
If this does not happen, once the glass is fitted, you will be able to see through the edge, more often than not to some sort of joint, such as worktop to unpainted wall, etc.
By over spraying all edges, the edges that want to be free of paint can now be removed after installation.
This helps improve the look of the finished job.
The side to be sprayed is prepared with normal window cleaner available in all supermarkets to make sure that the surface is clean and dry.
Should there be any surface scuffs to the glass, these can be lost if it is possible to make that the "to be sprayed side" as the paint can fill these slight imperfections and make them impossible to see.
Once the panels are prepared they are typically placed into a spray booth with the glass lying flat on a rack.
It is important to spray glass flat and not upright because if the paint runs, it can spoil the finished appearance.
It is important to keep in mind that unlike most spray painted items, it is in fact the first coat that is the most important as that is the one that is seen.
