How to Choose a Dresser

    • 1). Measure the free space in your room. Not only should you make sure that you have the length and width measurements, you should also make sure that you know how high your dresser can be.

    • 2). Determine what you are going to store in the dresser. In most cases, dressers are used for clothes, but some dressers have jewelry drawers and compartments for shoes, as well. Figuring out what you want to store in the dresser can help you decide which style to choose.

    • 3). Choose the material that you want the dresser to be made of. Wood is more expensive than particle board, but it is also lighter and less inclined to buckle or shatter. If the other furniture in your room has predominantly light or dark wood, you may choose to match the color. If you are going to be storing seasonal items in the dresser, cedar will protect against pests.

    • 4). Decide on the type of dresser that you want. Standard dressers are usually waist high and fairly long, with two or three columns of drawers. A chest of drawers is taller and narrower than a standard dresser, and is ideal when you do not have a lot of floor space. An armoire dresser has both drawers and space to hang clothing; it is essentially a portable closet and requires a fair amount of space.

    • 5). Choose a style that you find attractive. Contemporary dressers have clean lines and sharp edges, while antique dressers may be mounted on club feet and will tend to have more decorative wooden flourishes. Dressers for children tend to have rounded corners and wooden knobs.
