Richard Louis Proenneke was a self-styled naturalist who lived in a small cabin that he built himself in Twin Lakes, Alaska. Since he built his cabin by himself using only hand tools and lived in the Alaskan wilderness by himself from the 1960's to the 1990's, he's become something of a folk hero. Richard Proenneke died in 2003 and he left his cabin to the state of Alaska; it's currently managed by the Lake Clark National Park and is open to the public for viewing. There are several interesting places to stay when you visit this pristine wilderness where Proennekke made his home. - The Farm Lodge is in Port Alsworth which is in Lake Clark National Park. Proenneke's cabin on Twin Lakes is near by and one of the exciting things to do when you visit here is to go flightseeing by float plane and see all the local wildlife- bears, moose, caribou, eagles, salmon to name a few. The lodge has comfortable accommodations with a private bath in each room and affordable meals too. You can book a group excursion to see the amazing Alaskan scenery or go on a customized backcountry trip.
