How do I Troubleshoot the Air Conditioner on a 1993 Jeep Liberty?
- 1). Inspect the A/C dials and switches on the dashboard control panel for any damage or resistance. Ensure that the A/C itself, and not just the electric blower fan, is switched on.
- 2). Start the engine and turn the A/C controls to their highest setting. Check under the hood to ensure the magnetic clutch on the A/C compressor starts. You will be able to hear and see the clutch turn. If the clutch does not turn, it may mean the A/C system is low on refrigerant. Have a mechanic refill the refrigerant for you. Check for any leaks on the compressor and hoses. Replace the hoses, if necessary. Ensure that the drive belt is securely connected to the compressor.
- 3). Open the fuse panel on the driver's side, and check for any fuses that have blown. If the metal strip inside any of the glass tubes is broken, you will need to replace that fuse. Replace any blown fuses with new ones of the exact same amperage rating.
- 4). Start the engine and open the hood. Check the two hoses located at the firewall. If they are both warm to the touch (one should be cooler than the other), there could be a problem with the valve control. Have a mechanic look into this for you.
- 5). Attach the A/C compression gauge (make sure the engine is turned off) and check to see if there is adequate pressure in the system. Readings should be between 50 PSI (Pounds Per Square Inch) and 80 PSI. If the readings do not fall into this range, have a mechanic take a look.
