The Keystone State often endures frigid winters. For those residents who don't want to give up their swims during the cold months of the year, several indoor swimming pools operate in Pennsylvania. Some are run by local government, and some are part of private fitness centers, while others are part of prestigious universities. - The Aquatic & Fitness Center (AFC) is a members-only club with four different locations in the eastern Pennsylvania area. The Philadelphia location consists of a 45,000 square foot facility. It features an Olympic-size double indoor pool with four levels of diving boards. It also has two smaller indoor heated pools and a whirlpool/sauna/steam room. The AFC offers an array of swim lessons and water aerobics for all ages. For nonmembers, it offers 14-day free trials available through the website.

afcfitness.com - The Oliver Bath House is run by the City Parks Department of Pittsburgh. It is open throughout the fall and winter. Daily admission is open to anyone, while only residents of Pittsburgh (with proof of residency) can purchase season passes. An single adult pass is $30 in 2010, while a family of four season pass is discounted at $60. The daily admission is $3 for children between 3 and 15, and $4 for those above 16. The Oliver Bath House also offers water aerobics and swimming lessons for every age.

city.pittsburgh.pa.us - The Pennbriar Athletic Club is located in Erie, the northernmost major city in Pennsylvania, on the shores of the Great Lake. Pennbriar is members only and features both an indoor swimming and an outdoor wave pool. The indoor pool is 25 yards long and includes two permanent lap lanes. Various aquatic classes, such as swim lessons and cardio workouts, are offered for members. Pennbriar also offers a course called Self-contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (S.C.U.B.A) Instruction, after which members can receive their National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) certification for scuba diving.

pennbriar.com - Sheerr Pool is located inside the 19,000 square foot David Pottruck Health & Fitness Center in Philadelphia and is used for the University of Pennsylvania intercollegiate swim and diving team. The Olympic-size pool has five separate lanes for swimming; however, since it is used by the university, it is only open for recreational use during certain hours of the day. Department of Recreation employees offer swim lessons to the public.
