Generic resumes are useful for filling up garbage cans as that's where most of them end up on the first pass through the stack.
Follow these 5 tips to get your resume noticed and in line for that all important job interview where you really get to sell yourself.
1).
When submitting a resume electronically in Microsoft Word, make sure that you are saving it in version 2003 and not 2007.
The reason being that many companies have not upgraded their software and may not have the latest version of Word.
Thus they can't open your document and won't try a second time.
2).
Use Times New Roman or Arial font in size 12.
This is the industry standard and is looked upon favorably by most human resources personnel as being easy to read.
3).
Use good quality paper when getting your resume printed.
Don't rely on copy paper to get noticed.
4).
Have at least two friends or mentors proof read your document with a critical eye.
Fix any spelling or grammatical errors before getting that final printing on good quality stock.
5).
Target your resume by using keywords from the job posting in your objective statement.
This will make it look like you are the exact person they need to hire.
That's it, good luck! Until next time,
