How to Treat Yeast Overgrowth

    • 1). Avoid foods that feed yeast and allow it to grow out of control. The main food source for yeast is sugar, so any foods containing sugar or that are broken down into sugar should be eliminated from your diet. This includes sweets such as candy, cake, cookies, and pastries, as well as simple carbohydrates such as pasta and white bread. Whole grains should be consumed only in moderation.

    • 2). Eat foods that will starve the yeast. The most successful diet for treating yeast overgrowth should contain a balance of protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Eat foods such as meat, fish, eggs, green leafy vegetables, and yogurt.

    • 3). Eat garlic and onions, which have natural anti-fungal properties.

    • 4). Take an herbal supplement designed to kill yeast. Look for anti-fungal ingredients such as olive leaf extract, black walnut, caprylic acid, garlic, and pau d'arco. You may want to take one type of supplement for a short-term initial cleanse, and then switch to another supplement designed for maintenance.

    • 5). Take a probiotic supplement. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that help keep yeast at bay and fight some diseases. Probiotics can also be found in foods such as yogurt.
