Signs & Symptoms of an Intestinal Virus
- There are several types of intestinal viruses. A rotavirus, commonly found in children between the ages of three and 15 months, usually occurs between November and April, with symptoms appearing one to two days after exposure. An adenovirus can occur year-round, and symptoms typically occur one week after exposure. This virus is usually found in those under two years of age. Calicivirus, the most common type, can affect people of all ages and usually strikes between October and April, with symptoms appearing one to three days after exposure. There is also the astrovirus, which effects mainly infants and the elderly. It occurs during the winter months, and symptoms appear within one to three days of exposure.
- The main symptoms of an intestinal virus are diarrhea and vomiting, though you may also experience headache, fever and chills. Abdominal pain can occur, along with muscle aches and pains. Exhaustion and a general weak feeling are also possible signs of an intestinal virus. Symptoms are usually mild and last less than 10 days.
- Intestinal viruses are extremely contagious and can spread quickly in certain environments, such as day care centers, nursing homes and schools. Unwashed hands are the main culprit in exposing others to an intestinal virus. You can also get a virus from sharing food and drinks, and from contaminated food.
- Intestinal viruses can be detected based on symptoms and a physical exam by your doctor. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of an intestinal virus you should notify her immediately, as she may want to do further testing to rule out any other possible causes. She may also request a stool sample to rule out a bacterial or parasitic infection.
- There is no specific treatment for an intestinal virus, as it really must run its course. The main objective is to reduce the symptoms you are experiencing and relieve discomfort. Your doctor may suggest you drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and eat small, light meals to help settle your stomach. She may also recommend anti-diarrhea medication to relieve that condition and help prevent dehydration.
