Creative Art Projects

    A Big You

    • Before working with students, cut several long lengths of paper that are big enough for children to lie down on. Make sure to cut enough so each student will have one sheet to work on. Fill several buckets with crayons and markers so children will have them close to their work area.

Gather the preschoolers together and discuss parts of their body, focusing on their faces. Point out that every person is different, but everyone has eyes, ears, noses and mouths. Trace around the outside of each preschooler while they lie on a piece paper. Have students color in their bodies and then write their names underneath themselves. Encourage them to be creative while coloring themselves in. Display the big portrait of each student in the classroom next to a photograph of the child.

    Handprint Cards

    • Gather various colors of tempera paint and a selection of construction paper before starting the project with students.

Allow each preschool student to pick a color of construction paper they would like to use and have them fold the paper in half. Using tempera paint, brush paint on each child's hand and then press onto paper. Sprinkle glitter over the handprint. When handprints are dry, decorate the outside of the handprint with crayons and have preschoolers write their names on the card.

    Imagination Masks

    • This project can be accomplished with a multitude of materials including feathers, markers, glue, glitter, construction paper, string, beads, scissors, and paint. Gather materials and place on a large worktable. This is a dress-for-mess project, so provide smocks for students to wear. Before working with students, cut mask shapes for preschool students out of construction paper or tag board, making sure to cut eyeholes.

With materials and masks provided, preschoolers can create a mask of their imagination. Allow masks to dry, and then punch holes on sides and attach string. Tie on masks for children to wear while playing.
