  Harwich is a port town on the coast of northeast Essex, England. Ships have weighed anchor in its sheltered waters for centuries. Ferries, cruise ships and cargo vessels set sail today from Harwich International Port. The port, at Harwich Haven, occupies a deep water harbor. Passengers and freight move from Harwich to destinations in the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Germany. Harwich neighbors the seaside resort town of Dovercourt, and today they are often described together as "Harwich."

Samuel Pepys

• The Samuel Pepys is a small hotel that occupies a 16th century timber framed building. It has six guest rooms: two double and four with single beds. Each room has a television and tea and coffee making facilities. Guests dine in the hotel restaurant, which offers locally-sourced food. Fine wines and real ale are on tap in the bar. The Samuel Pepys takes its name from the 17 century diarist, who served as a Member of Parliament for Harwich.

The Pier

• The Pier is in Harwich Old Town and overlooks the quayside. It occupies two buildings, the main one dating back to the 1850s and the other, next door, is a former pub built in the 1700s. The Pier has 14 guest rooms, seven in each building, and each has satellite television, a minibar and tea and coffee making facilities. The hotel houses two restaurants: The Ha'Penny, which offers a full bistro menu, and The Harbourside, specializing in seafood. Room rates include a continental breakfast.
