Nonsurgical Scoliosis Treatments
- Scoliosis is a deformity of the backbone that causes a noticeable curve when seen from the front, especially when the curvature worsens over time.
- A doctor will check for a family history of scoliosis, examine the body externally to check for asymmetry and may order x-rays. If the spinal curvature becomes worse over time, the doctor will diagnose scoliosis.
- Modern plastic braces are contoured to the body and are meant to be nearly invisible under clothing. They will not cure scoliosis, but should keep the curvature from progressing further.
- The Milwaukee brace covers the full torso and has a neck ring for curvatures of the upper spine. This type of brace is not in common use today.
- For minor curvatures, a doctor may recommend simply monitoring the condition over time. Mild scoliosis in some children improves without intervention as they reach adolescence.
- According to the Mayo Clinic, chiropractic, massage and muscle-strengthening exercises are not proven to cure scoliosis. However, these alternative therapies may be used in conjunction with proven treatments to reduce pain caused by scoliosis.
