How to Repair Bicycle Parts

    • 1). Check the tightness of components on the bicycle. Using your Allen wrenches, check the tightness of the bolts that hold the seat post, stem and handlebars. Each of these bolts should be snug, but not overly tight, particularly if any of these components are carbon. Squeeze pairs of spokes together to check for tightness. If any spokes are exceptionally loose, tighten their nipples using a spoke wrench. If you hear clicking noises from your pedals, remove them using a pedal wrench. Regrease their threads using thick grease. Retighten them with a pedal wrench until they are snug.

    • 2). Lubricate your chain and derailleur cables. To lubricate your chain, clean the chain off using a rag. Apply chain lube, and shift through all the gears repeatedly. Use a rag to quickly wipe off any excess lube. To lubricate the front shift cables, shift the front derailleur to its hardest gear. Without pedaling, shift into the easiest gear. The cable will be slack and easy to lubricate. For the rear shift cable, shift into the easiest gear. Switch into the hardest gear without pedaling. Use chain oil to lubricate the cables. Spin the pedals to shift the gears. Tighten the cables again.

    • 3). Clean your bicycle using bike cleaner. Spray bike cleaner on the bicycle, and wipe off with a rag. Bike cleaner helps dislodge dirt from the bike and keeps the paint shiny. Dirt can interfere with the performance of the componentry on the bike. Avoid spraying any bike cleaner on the brakes. The cleaner can be slippery. which affects braking performance.

    • 4). Clean the bicycle's chain rings and derailleur pulleys with a rag. The chain rings are the gears at the front of the bike. Cleaning these parts will help improve shifting performance. The derailleur pulleys are the wheels attached to a bicycle's rear derailleur. Cleaning these parts will help the chain move freely. Put a few drops of chain lube on the pulleys to keep them from squeaking.
