Japa mala or rosary is unison of the sacred beads, connected together; which is used for chanting the holy names of the lord or a mantra or any other spiritual meditation which is also known as sadhana or jaap/ japa. It is a simple way to keep your mind at peace, engrossed in realizing your own true self. It invokes special powers to change your consciousness, fulfil your desires to attain mercy of the lord, realizing your connection with him and also to promote healing.
Japa malas are commonly made from various materials. It could be rudraksh wood, tulsi wood, semi-precious gems or wood from the Bodhi tree. Different stones or gems are used in accordance with different healing to be provided or desire to be fulfilled. Each type of bead material has special properties which affects the practitioner's subconscious mind. It has a slow but a permanent effect.
In Hindu culture, some steps are to be followed or things are to be kept in mind while you chant on the rosary beads.
You must make sure that you use your own beads while reciting your mantras. Mostly each one chants differently on different mantras even, so if everyone uses the same mala, the frequencies which have been developed in it can even affect your life negatively.
Hence, everyone must have their separate malas. On regular use, the powerful vibrations developed in it help your mind to concentrate on the mantra.
If one is told to chant two or three mantras, then the same rosary must be used as the frequencies developed in the beads, prove beneficial to the person.
A bead bag must be used to store the beads in. This bag is in a shape of cow's face. It is said that after one receives the japa mala from his guru or the spiritual master, it must not kept visible to anyone. It is believed that if the mala is exposed while you chant, the benefits of your chanting automatically transfers to the one who is seeing it. Due to this belief, devotees carry their mala in the bead bags.This bag is also called a gomukhi.
The mala must be drawn towards oneself. A majority of the practitioners experience distress if the beads are pushed away from oneself. The reason being that while drawing it towards our self, the positive energy, pranvayu (Sanskrit word) is active and on the other hand, if the beads are pushed away, the negative energy, samanvayu (Sanskrit word) is active. Happiness and joy is experienced when instead of samanvayu, pranvayu is active and leading our life.
The reciting of the mantras is practiced by holding the mala in the right hand, wrapped around the middle finger and the thumb drawing it towards oneself. The index finger should be avoided.
