The Vonage Softphone is a software program that can be used on your personal computer to make calls. This application uses Session Initiation Protocol for making calls over various networks, including conventional telephone networks and the Internet. The Softphone has two different audio compression codecs for service delivery on broadband, dial-up and wireless connections. - The minimum software and hardware required before you can make use of Vonage Softphone on your computer system include at least a Windows 98 or Mac OSX version 10.2 operating system, a Pentium II 300 processor, and at least 128 MB of RAM. In addition, you will need a 16-bit color setting, a 16-bit sound card and a wired or wireless broadband or dial-up Internet connection.
- The wizard allows you to adjust the audio output of the speakers and microphone. To get the best audio quality, be careful during the audio set-up process; stay silent while calibrating the microphone so no external noise interferes.
- Conferencing and auto-conferencing calls enable several people to take part in the same call. Conferencing is supported on this platform for both regular telephone and Internet calls. You can initiate the call using the conference button on the phone, or others can bring you in to a conference call. When auto-conferencing is launched, the Softphone functions as a standalone conference server, and it can operate on a local or remote machine.
- Other features of the Softphone include hot keys for major functions, tool tips when hovering over items in the user interface, dynamic codex selection, an easy-to-use menu, Touchstones VoiP technology and an internal phone book.
