The Types of Blanket Throws
- Fleece blanket throws are typically made from polyester and other synthetic materials, making them easy to care for. They are very soft, comfortable and retain heat easily. Fleece throws are lightweight and ideal for children. They are available in many colors, patterns, sizes and even themes. One benefit to fleece throws is that they are relatively inexpensive. Small fleece throws can be used as baby blankets, while large fleece throws can be used as additional blankets on a bed in colder months.
- Wool blanket throws tend to be very durable and last a long time. Wool throws are also very warm. Some are manufactured at mills, while others are custom-made or handwoven. Handwoven throws are available in a number of custom designs, including curved twill, pebble, twill block, woven ribbon and plaited twill. Plaid wool throws are also fairly common, and many are made with a mixture of colors. Wool blanket throws are lightweight and naturally fire retardant, so while they may ignite in a fire, they will burn slowly or even self-extinguish. Wool throws also tend to be expensive relative to other types.
- Down blanket throws are generally made from cotton and filled with goose or bird down feathers. These throws are known for their comfort, durability, warmth and elegant designs. The quality of down throws depends on what down feathers are used for the fill. Like other types of blanket throws, these are lightweight and easy to store. They are available in a wide range of colors and patterns, although white is a trendy color that can suit many decors. Look for box stitching, quilt squares or V-stitching on down throws. Down blanket throws are often more expensive than fleece throws, but usually less expensive than wool throws.
- Faux fur blanket throws are designed to appear and feel like real fur. Some are reversible or double-sided, while others have a silky or suede lining. Faux fur throws retain warmth easily, feel smooth on the skin and are very comfortable. While there is a large variety of faux furs available, such as mink, cheetah, arctic fox and chinchilla, there are also colored faux furs. Some are brightly colored, including pink, orange, lime green and yellow, and are ideal for a child's bedroom as a decoration or for additional warmth at night. Faux furs are a stylish addition to any room.
