How to Fix an Oil Soaked Cell Phone

    • 1). Wipe away as much of the oil as possible with a dry cloth.

    • 2). Remove the battery from the phone. Chances are the battery is ruined and you will need to purchase a new one. Contact your cell phone provider or visit a local electronics store to locate a replacement battery.

    • 3). Pour 3 cups of distilled water into a bowl. Place the cell phone into the distilled water. This may seem counterproductive, but the water will rinse out any oil that has soaked into the cracks and crevices of the phone.

    • 4). Allow the phone to soak for two to three minutes.

    • 5). Remove the phone and dry it off immediately with a cloth.

    • 6). Dry the phone with a can of compressed air. These cans, sold in major electronics stores, are generally used to clean computer keyboards and other electronics. Avoid drying the phone with a heat source, such as a hair dryer. This could cause further damage.

    • 7). Fill a bowl with 3 cups uncooked white rice. Place the cell phone into the bowl and allow it to sit overnight. The rice will help draw out any remaining liquid from the cell phone.

    • 8). Wipe the rice from the cell phone with a cloth, place the battery into the phone and see if it works.
