How to File for Chapter Seven in Kentucky

    • 1). Complete a debtor's education course six months before filing bankruptcy, as required by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court (see Resources).

    • 2). Download and fill out the bankruptcy forms, including the voluntary petition, list of creditors, credit counseling disclosure and any other schedules that apply to your situation (see Resources). You must use official bankruptcy forms in your Chapter 7 filing. Be prepared to disclose your list of creditors, property, income and living expenses, among other requirements. Sign and date each form.

    • 3). Attach the filing fee to your bankruptcy petition that you will file with the court. The filing fee for Chapter 7 bankruptcy is $299, as of 2011. You cannot pay by personal check. You must pay using a money order, certified check, cash or credit card.

    • 4). Locate your local U.S. Bankruptcy Court location (see Resources). File the documents and filing fee with the court's clerk. Kentucky has an Eastern District and Western District court for you to file your documents.

    • 5). Wait for the court to contact you to arrange a date for your bankruptcy proceeding. Be prepared to testify about information listed in your filings, including your income, assets and other documents.
