How to Keep a Horse From Chewing Another's Tail

  • 1). Use a mane comb to brush tangles out of the tail of the horse or horses that are having their tails chewed by the tail chewer.

  • 2). Coat the victims tails with un-diluted concentrated mane and tail conditioner. Apply conditioner so that it forms a thick, gooey paste on the horses' tails.

  • 3). Leave conditioner in horse's tails for several days, reapplying as necessary. The conditioner is non-toxic but will leave a foul taste in your tail chewer's mouth. Continue to re-apply as necessary.

  • 4). Place tail bags over your horses' tails to discourage future chewing, even after you feel you have broken your tail chewer of the habit.
