Standard Height for Bathroom Wall Lighting
- Wall sconces make an attractive addition to a bathroom lighting plan, when used as an additional source of general lighting. The correct height for wall sconces in a bathroom depends on your space and light fixture. Sconces should be hung high enough to block views of the bare bulb, usually at least 6 feet from the floor. In bathrooms with high ceilings, hang the lights a little higher so they appear proportionate to your space. Three to 6 inches higher for every extra foot of ceiling height above 8 feet is a good starting point.
- Vanity lights are often hung above a vanity mirror to give you concentrated task lighting where you need you it. In this case, try to hang your fixture just above the mirror, allowing just an inch or two of space between the bottom of the light and the top of your mirror. If your mirror is also a medicine cabinet, leave enough space to allow the door to open and close easily.
- Vanity lights hung on each side of a mirror produce even light on your face, reducing the shadows caused by vanity lights hung above the mirror. To hang vanity lighting on either side of your mirror, install the fixtures at about eye level, usually about 6 feet from the floor. If this height allows you to see the bare bulb in your fixture, adjust the height until it's no longer visible.
- Follow manufacturer's instructions for bulb wattage for maximum efficiency and safety. Ensure your lighting plans are in accordance with local lighting codes, as some ordinances prevent certain kinds of lights from begin hung near bathtubs and showers. Try to have your vanity mirror purchased and ready to be hung before you have your electrical work for the lighting done, as this will prevent expensive adjustments later if your mirror dimensions are different than expected.
