Video Transcript
Hi, this is Dr. Debra Jaliman, a board certified dermatologist in New York City and author of "Skin Rules" talking about how to moisturize your face in men without causing pimples. When you go to the store whether it's the drugstore or the department store to buy a moisturizer, make certain that it says these words, non-comedogenic, oil free, what does that mean? A non-comedogenic product means that it won't block your pores. Many products are very moisturizing but they have heavy oils in them and they can block the pores. When they block your pores they will cause acne. They'll cause blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, may even cause cysts and that's something that we call acne cosmetica and it's actually caused by the cosmetic. So there are people that have normal skin but are a little acne prone and when you block the pore you don't allow the oil from the pore to come to the surface and acne starts and you can get these acne bumps and it's very frustrating because here you're using a moisturizer to make your skin look better and in fact you're making it look worse. Many people come to me with bags of moisturizer and broken out skin. So it's very simple. When you go to the store if you have a salesperson there, ask them is it non-comedogenic? Does it say oil free? If they say yes, don't believe them, then look at the label and make certain for yourself. Even I've been fooled and have ended up with a face full of bumps. So make certain to look at the label yourself. It has to say it on the label. It has to say dermatologist tested, non-comedogenic, oil free. If it has those famous words, you know you're safe and then you won't end up breaking out from your moisturizer. This is Dr. Debra Jaliman, a board certified dermatologist in New York City talking about picking a moisturizer for men so that they don't break out with pimples.
