Success at NSW State Champs Endurance

Congratulations to Bridi Rice and Pocket Full of Posies with a successful completion at the NSW State Championship Endurance Ride where they completed their first160km….in the rain!

The diminutive pair were almost swimming as they crossed the last river in pitch black and pouring rain. They were the last pair through before the crossing was deemed unsafe and closed.

The conditions were appalling, I drowned 3 coats over the 20 hours I was on duty, one of them a well-oiled drizabone. I lifted a Keiffer saddle that had no dye left in the panels and must have weighed at least 15 kilos! Riders commented it was the first ride they had ever come in having gained weight instead of lost it!

Rosie didn't acquire any injuries but I was on hand for her arrival back into camp at every check, where a big con-cern was keeping a wet pony warm while she rested in the cold, wet condi-tions.

While her capable strapper attended to rugs/food and hot tea for Bridi And the pony, I ensured Rosie stayed sup-ple and kept eating. It is vital for an endurance horse to eat as much as pos-sible at each break as well as picking grass along the track. If they don't eat they will be vetted out, regardless of performance.

Rosie can become quite tense and unable to relax enough to eat, but a combination of red light on the stomach points and some cranio sacral work ensured she ate plenty. I also found Sp 21 was a very useful point for relaxing her in the girth area and Bowen therapy helped to keep Rosie's back supple and pain free . This is also a credit to Bridi who managed the ride in an all-round balanced fashion.

Unfortunately, a pectoral tear ( a pad-dock injury) has prevented the pair from entering the Quilty Cup but we are looking forward to next season with the inclusion of a new member of the team , Splitters Creek Red Jewel…..who already has a completion over 80km under his belt.
