How to Decorate Military Housing

    Make it Personal

    • 1). Hang a collection of wall maps; use markers or pins to show where your family has been.

    • 2). Buy wall sticker decals. They are inexpensive and can be removed and repositioned without harming the walls.

    • 3). Frame family photographs so that they can either stand alone or be hung on the walls.

    • 4). Bring your own cabinet knobs, drawer pulls and shower heads to lend your rooms a familiar air right away. Keep the standard-issue hardware together in a box under the kitchen sink for a quick swap when it's moving time again.

    Make it Lightweight

    • 1). Add color to the walls by pinning up colorful quilts.

    • 2). Collect inexpensive throw pillows, afghans and throw rugs to add splashes of color and familiarity without weighing down the moving truck.

    • 3). Hang easy-to-strip wallpaper borders on the walls. If you find a pattern you love, buy a lot of it and use the same paper in the same room each time you move.

    • 4). Add personality to your rooms by hanging your own curtains.

    • 5). Hang sheet-glass mirrors instead of heavy framed wall art. It doubles the space visually and is easy to replace.

    Make it Double-Duty

    • 1). Buy furniture and other items that can perform two or more functions. Buy a sofa bed instead of a sofa, for example.

    • 2). Acquire a coffee table with storage drawers or use a steamer trunk. Buy footstools that double as storage space.

    • 3). Find a buffet cabinet that houses a fold-out table. Buy or make a decorative screen that can also serve as a room divider.

    • 4). Hang area rugs on the floor or the walls, as they not only add color but they provide some sound deadening.

    • 5). Collect your furniture so that each piece matches the others for maximum decorating flexibility.
