How to Remove Stains From Carpets

Whether you have mild or heavy stains on the carpet, every stain requires a different method of cleaning. When you see certain discolorations on the carpet, read your owner's manual to determine the best way to clean them because not all carpets are made of the same material. If you're into green living, there are also eco-friendly and natural ways to get those blemishes out of the carpet.

The first thing you should do is pre-treat the stain by putting some salt and cleaning solution on the material and letting it sit. After this you want to pour more cleaning solution over the area in question and let the solution sit for five to ten minutes. Take a scrub brush and scrub the area until the problem is lifted up out from the carpet. Let the stained area dry then vacuum it.

Ink is one of the most difficult stains to remove from a carpet but it can be done. What you shouldn't do is scrub the ink off the carpet because this will aggravate the problem and leave ink deeper into the carpet threads. Instead you want to use a paper towel to soak up the excess ink before you clean the ink out. Then get a rag and put a few drops of alcohol on it. Blot the ink stain with the rag until the stain is removed.

To get coffee stains out of your carpet, blot the area with two large paper towels. After this spray warm water on the discoloration and let it soak for a few minutes. After soaking you want to combine liquid detergent and water in a bottle. Spray the mixture on the coffee stain then rinse the stain by sprinkling water on it. After you do this you should place a dry towel over the stain.

For beer and wine stains, you would blot them with paper towels. Mix a combination of white vinegar and water and spray the solution on the beer or wine stains. Once you spray the solution on, blot the affected area with a paper towel. After this you want to take a cup of warm water and a few drops of liquid detergent and pour a small amount of this mixture on the stains. Finally, put a dab of plain water on the stains and blot it until the carpet dries.

Here are additional tips on removing carpet stains. As soon as the stain occurs you should clean it immediately so the stain will have less time to sink in the carpet. You always want to wet the stain first before you clean it and always use the right carpet cleaner for the material your carpet is made of. If purchasing carpet cleaner, make sure to test the spray in an inconspicuous area first in case the chemicals in the remover stain or discolor your carpet.
