Treatments for Acid Reflux in Infants

    Signs

    • If your baby experiences frequent spitting up, discomfort during and after eating, irritability, or poor feedings, see your doctor about a possible reflux diagnosis.

    When Treatment is Unnecessary

    • When acid reflux is mild and your baby is growing normally and appears content, no treatment may be needed. Most babies simply outgrow reflux between 1 and 2 years old, according to the NDDIC.

    Lifestyle Changes

    • If reflux is causing discomfort, your doctor may recommend minor lifestyle changes such as smaller, more frequent meals, keeping baby upright during and after eating, or adding cereal to formula or expressed breast milk.

    Prescriptions

    • When lifestyle changes aren't enough your doctor can prescribe medication to reduce stomach acid production or prevent stomach contents from flowing into the esophagus.

    For Severe Symptoms

    • In severe cases, babies may need surgery to tighten the muscle that controls the flow of stomach contents into the esophagus, says the Mayo Clinic.
