How to Get a Refund for Sales Tax Paid in Error
Instructions
1Ask for the refund directly. If the error was caused by a store clerk typing in the wrong price, you may be able to get the money back by simply returning to the place and asking for it. Most stores will oblige without hesitation.
2
Contact the company's headquarters or customer service's office if you bought something over the Internet and cannot talk to a clerk face to face. Online sales tax is a tricky situation, but if you live in a different state than where the business is located, you shouldn't pay any taxes on items bought online. If you did, you may be able to get a refund.
3
Bring resale or exemption certificates with you if you own a business. You should be exempt from taxes on items bought for resale, so if you were charged taxes in error, you can get a refund by presenting the appropriate paperwork showing your tax exempt status.
4
File a tax refund claim for sales tax paid in error in areas other than retail. This includes taxes paid on utilities or exempt items under tax laws and regulations. The claim must be filed with the Tax Commissioner of your state and requires a form that should be downloaded from your state's tax commission website. You can also ask for this form at any tax office in your city.
5
File for a refund if you paid taxes in another state (or online) and can't go back to the original place to get a refund in person. This may not be worth it for small items bought at a store, but it can make a big difference for larger items.
