Homemade Mailbox

    • 1). Saw a 9-inch by 22-inch piece of 3/4-inch thick hardwood for the bottom of the mail box.

    • 2). Make two 7 5/8-inch by 22-inch pieces for the sides of the mail box.

    • 3). Cut two 10-inch by 13 3/8-inch pieces for the front and back.

    • 4). Draw and cut the roof peak shape from the top portions of the back and front pieces. Make a mark at the top centers of the front and back pieces to indicate the center point for the roof's peak. Measure 7 5/8 inches up the sides of the front and back pieces, to indicate the bottoms of the roof peaks. Use a ruler to connect the marks, tracing diagonal lines running from the side marks to the peak center point marks. Remove the delineated wedge shapes, using the saw.

    • 5). Measure and draw a 7 1/2-inch wide by 8 3/4-inch tall door at the bottom center of the front piece, using the ruler. Cut out the door opening. Cut an equally sized piece of hardwood to use as the door

    • 6). Saw two 9 1/2-inch by 25 1/4-inch pieces of 3/8-inch thick hardwood for the roof panels.

    • 7). Sand all cut edges, then assemble the pieces into a house shape, securing the joints together with wood glue and 3d finish nails.

    • 8). Screw a cabinet knob to the door as a doorknob and mount the door to the mailbox with decorative hinges. Glue a small strip of 3/8-inch hardwood to the inside of the door frame to act as a stop and attach a latch to the outside so the door can be secured shut.

    • 9). Glue and nail a wooden dollhouse ridge cap along the roof's peak to cover the gap between the panels and prevent leaking. Seal other joints from inside, using outdoor caulk.
