Video: Summary of the Connections Between Chromosomes, Genes & DNA

Video Transcript

Hi, I'm Michael Maidaa, and this is the summary of the connections between chromosomes, DNA and genes. First, I'm going to start out with a drawing of DNA. DNA contains all the blueprints or information necessary in order to build an organism. There are segments of the DNA that are called genes. These genes contain coding information for a specific characteristics and traits of the organism. These genes can be transcribed and then translated into proteins. These proteins have then different biological functions responsible for the organism's shape, structure and function. Genes are then packaged into chromosomes. So, here we have a simple drawing of a chromosome. A chromosome contains a bunch of different genes. Each human has 23 pairs of chromosomes. Each chromosome has specific genes that are packaged into it, and we get one pair from the mother and one pair from the father. So, to overview, we have DNA which is the information and blueprints for building an organism. We have segments of the DNA called genes that code for proteins that are responsible for characteristics and traits of an organism. Genes themselves are packaged and organized into chromosomes. We have 23 pairs of chromosomes, one from our mother and one from our father. I'm Michael Maidaa and this has been the summary of the connections between DNA, chromosomes and genes.
