How to Replace a Bathtub Spigot

    Replacing a Slip-on Spout

    • 1). Look for a set screw on the bottom of your spout. Loosen this screw and pull firmly on the spout to remove it.

    • 2). Push your new slip-on spout on to the copper piping. Twist it back and forth slightly as you push it on to help slide it on easier.

    • 3). Tighten down the set screw underneath the spout. Turn on the water and make sure no leaks are present around the spout.

    Replacing a Screw-on Spout

    • 1). Place a pipe wrench on the old spout and turn it counterclockwise to remove it from the piping.

    • 2). Unscrew the pipe nipple from the wall with a pipe wrench.

    • 3). Install a new nipple into the wall of the correct length that will work with your new spout. Wrap Teflon tape around the thread and screw it into the piping in the wall. Tighten with a pipe wrench until tight. The installation instructions that come with your spout will specify how long of a nipple you need.

    • 4). Wrap Teflon tape around the thread of the pipe nipple protruding from the wall. Screw the new spout on to the threads. Tighten it down with a pipe wrench.

    • 5). Turn the water on and make sure no leaks are present from around the spout.
