What Do You Need to Get Preapproved for a Mortgage?

    Find a Lender

    • Look around for a lender, someone you want to service your loans. Contact three lenders to find out if what they have to offer to you meets your needs.

    Submit Financial Data

    • Fill out a loan application and include with it financial data including recent pay stubs, bank statements, tax returns, investment income and other information such as your address and employer. Your lender will explain what forms are needed and how far back you must go to satisfy their requirements.

    Credit Reports

    • Your lender will obtain copies of your credit reports, but you should do the same before applying for a mortgage. Review your credit reports and know your credit score. If there are problems or mistakes on your reports, your credit score can be lowered making it more difficult for you to obtain financing and at a favorable interest rate.

    Tips

    • You are not beholden to a lender even with a mortgage pre-approval. Show a copy of your mortgage pre-approval lender to the seller upon request.
