How to Make Mismatched Bedroom Furniture Work

    • 1). Opt to paint or stain mismatched bedroom furniture to create a more coordinated look. Paint the bed frame, headboard, dresser, shelving and any other furniture brown, white or dark blue, or choose to stain all pieces a light or dark wood color to create a furniture set that is matching in color, regardless of style.

    • 2). Replace all knobs and hardware on furniture to help mismatched styles blend. Choose a specific knob or handle style and use on all furniture drawers and cabinets in the room. Choose a curtain rod and light switch plate in a similar style and color, whether it be silver, gold or colored, to match.

    • 3). Select an overall color scheme for the room based on the current furniture color and style. Opt for a neutral brown, blue or white to showcase dark wood furniture pieces, or choose green, dark yellow or deep red to make white and light wood furniture stand out.

    • 4). Choose fabrics and linens for the room that coordinate with the chosen wall and furniture colors. Bring the style of the room together by using complementary fabric colors for the bedding, curtains and throw pillows. Reupholster chairs with the same fabric to blend with the decor theme. Using the same color palette for the blanket on the bed, the pillows on a chair and the rug next to the dresser ensures a uniform appearance in the room, regardless of furniture style.

    • 5). Use decor items and wall art to complete the look of the room. Hang pictures on the wall, using frames in a single color but of different styles and sizes, to coordinate with the overall mismatched look. Place candles and vases filled with faux flowers on nightstands, dressers and tables around the room for a harmonized appearance.
